Steinway & Sons was founded by master craftsmen,
trained in the best European tradition. They built their
pianos one at a time, applying skills that were handed
down from master to apprentice, generation after
generation. They still build their pianos that way. Each
Steinway grand piano, for example, takes nearly a year
to create. Nothing is hurried. Even the carefully
selected woods employed in the rims, tops, soundboards,
and actions cure for months in our yard, kilns and
conditioning rooms, until they stabilize at a rigidly
specified moisture content.
David Andersen is the only piano technician I’ve ever
met with whom I truly see eye to eye. He understands
three dimensional “sonic bubble” that exists, magically
suspended, above the sound board. He knows that balanced
voicing yields a piano that can whisper like muted
strings, and bark like fortissimo brass a moment later.
On a piano tuned, regulated, and voiced by David, timbre
and dynamics move smoothly in tandem from one extreme to
the other.”

years ago in Los Angeles, where I live, when I
had a Steinway “B” that was badly in need of
