Piano Sales
I have thought of selling
pianos for 25 years; I sold a few Steinway
grands, both vintage and new Hamburg models, in
the 80's and early 90's, as private party
sales. I then imagined opening a piano store, and in
fact seriously considered and worked toward opening a
store with a partner in 2000. As we got closer to
writing big checks and committing big funds, I realized
I didn't want to sit in a store all day - I wanted to
keep working as a technician; I didn't want to sell
inexpensive, uninteresting (to me) pianos, and I didn't
want to deal with people whose sole motivation
was price, who came with no prior conversation, no
referral or connection, no trust.
In 2002 I read a book called
"The
Piano shop on the Left Bank." I was enthralled by
the idea---catalyzed by the book's store-within-a-store
in Paris---of a sort of "you have to know me,"
word-of-mouth piano shop, where the art and craft of
pianos and the high standards of world-class artists and
the artisan's sense of musicality were the guiding
passion and principle.
So, this is it:
THE
ATELIER. We have a beautiful location, great
players and piano lovers of all kinds coming by
regularly, a concert every couple of months, and some
world-class pianos for sale---my dream come true.
And I retain my extraordinary client base, working on
pianos every day.
My goal is for
THE
ATELIER to be perceived as a place where you
can always walk in and play some fantastic pianos, and
you'll always have a good time. Where technicians and
teachers can bring their clients to an atmosphere of
calm, beauty, and culture and help them
choose a piano in the most unhurried, focused way. I'll
leave you completely alone for as long as you need; I'll
bring you food and drink. If you're a technician, I'll
leave my tools in
THE
ATELIER so you can work with the voicing,
tuning, or regulation if you wish, for demonstration
purposes.
