German Pianos
This big, resource-rich European heartland has been the pre-eminent source of fine pianos for the last 100 years---and it's no different today. All of the "Tier I" pianos in Larry Fine's The Piano Book, the bible of the enlightened piano buyer, are made in Germany except one:
-Hamburg Steinway (Germany)
-Bosendorfer (Germany)
-Steingraeber (Germany)
-Bluthner (Germany)
-Fazioli (Italy)
The reason for this is the undying devotion within German society to making the finest manufactured products in the world, from Mercedes to Braun and piano tools to clocks. There is a celebration of the artisan, of an attention to detail and quality, that is not present to such a degree in any other culture, and something we can be grateful for as intelligent consumers.
